Elections

List of questions

Here is a list of all the questions (across all wards) we have asked for this election:

  1. Cambridge suffers from a huge shortage of on-street public cycle parking, and a staggeringly high rate of cycle theft - over 10% of reported crime. We want to see a formal strategy to get on-street cycle parking provided all around Cambridge, with a target of say, 100-200 spaces per year initially. Do you support this?

  2. Do you support our view that traffic policing (including fining of cyclists without lights or using pedestrian-only pavements) should become a greater police priority?

  3. Following the remarkable success of 20 mph zones in Hull, we wish to see many more 20 mph zones in and around Cambridge for both safety and environmental reasons. Do you support this objective?

  4. Cycling offers a huge opportunity to reduce motor traffic and free up road space. Do you have any suggestions for additional cycling promotion activities that the Council could do?

  5. Cycle parking at the railway station is in extremely short supply, with all spaces full even early in the day. Do you support conversion of more car parking spaces at the station to cycle parking now before the area is redeveloped?

  6. Cambridge Cycling Campaign is promoting a new route for pedestrians and cyclists called the 'Chisholm Trail', alongside the railway, joining up many journey destinations between Addenbrooke's to the south and the Science Park to the north. This would make many journeys much quicker. Do you support this in principle?

  7. Some cyclists have told us they feel unsafe riding alongside the two short stretches of Lensfield Road and East Road where car parking is allowed in spite of the heavy traffic. Such car parking narrows the space available considerably. Do you support removal of this car parking in the interests of improved traffic flow and the safety of cyclists?

  8. We favour the removal of car parking on at least one side of Trumpington Road outside the Botanic Gardens. The current cycle lanes in the 'dooring zone' alongside parked cars endanger cyclists and are against government policy. Our proposal would allow wider cycle lanes and a buffer zone between the parked cars and the cycle lanes to protect cyclists from opened car doors . Do you support this?

  10. Some cyclists have told us they feel unsafe riding over the A14 Histon junction, because of crossing the exit roads down onto the A14, and along Histon Rd, because of its narrowness. Do you support measures to improve safety for cyclists in these two areas?

  11. Some cyclists have told us they feel unsafe riding on the main road through Girton village, because of the volume of traffic, the level of on-street parking and the lack of cycle lanes. Do you support restrictions on car parking, and improved cycling infrastructure, in this area?

  12. Over the A14 between Histon and Girton is a bridge, currently used by NIAB. If this were opened to cyclists as part of NIAB land developments it would enable many to avoid the Histon A14 roundabout and other sections of busy road. In principle, would you support the development of a cycle route across this bridge?

  13. The changes to King's Hedges Road as a result of the Arbury Park development have made cycling much more difficult in this area, with the result that few people now cycle there. Would you support works to remodel this area extensively to add new 'hybrid cycle lanes' (2.5m wide, on-road but with cobble separation) to make cycling there a more attractive option?

  14. If the County Council's proposed Congestion Charge goes ahead, it is likely that the free, up-front money that would be received from the government to support prior improvements to public transport and cycling would be of the order of some £100m a year for four years. This is roughly ten times the amount the County currently receives for transport. If the scheme goes ahead, what would be your priorities for use of this up-front money?

  15. At present, permitted car parking in cycle lanes on Gilbert Road makes cycling unpleasant and unsafe in an area through which thousands of school children travel daily. Given that virtually all houses have their own off-road car parking, would you support the replacement of the on-road parking on Gilbert Road with on-road red mandatory cycle lanes?

  16. Some 47,500 new dwellings are to be built around Cambridge in the next ten years, increasing the population by perhaps 125,000 people. Although a Congestion Charge with half-a-billion pounds of up-front government money is proposed as a key means to deal with this, what would your suggestions be for reducing car usage and encouraging cycling in the new developments?

  17. The pavement on the western side of Rustat Road stops before the entrance to the cycle bridge. Are you willing to press for a continuous pavement along this side of Rustat Road to enable pedestrians to walk past the entrance to the cycle bridge without having to walk in the cycle lane?

  21. We are seeking a trial of a new type of cycle provision in the city - 'hybrid cycle lanes', as used in Holland and Germany. These are 2-3m wide, on-road but with a degree of separation from other vehicles. They combine the best aspects of both off-road and on-road cycle lanes but without the downsides of both. The picture on our website illustrates the concept. What do you feel about this idea, and is there anywhere in your ward where you think these could be tried?
