Elections

List of questions

Here is a list of all the questions (across all wards) we have asked for this election:

  1. There is a major shortage of cycle parking all around the city. Cycle theft is over 10% of all reported crime in the County. Do you have any suggestions for locations for cycle parking? Would you be willing to see a very small proportion of on-street car parking being replaced by on-street cycle parking in your ward? How will you work towards a situation where every resident and every worker in every ward can keep a bike safe?

  2. Do you support our view that traffic policing (including fining of cyclists without lights or using pedestrian-only pavements) should become a greater police priority?

  3. We believe that 20mph should be the norm for local streets in residential areas (as distinct from main connecting roads). 20mph would: greatly encourage walking and cycling; improve the quality of life in an area for residents; and would not delay car journeys significantly (because only the start/end of a journey would be affected). Do you agree that 20mph should become the norm for local streets in Cambridge and surrounding villages?

  4. Do you have any other general cycling-related comments or points? And what support have you given for cycling and walking, or sustainable transport more generally, in the past?

  5. Some cyclists have told us they feel unsafe riding along the two short stretches of Lensfield Road and East Road where car parking is allowed in spite of the heavy traffic. Such car parking narrows the space available considerably. Do you support removal of this car parking in the interests of improved traffic flow and the safety of cyclists?

  6. Do you actively support the proposed construction of a 3,000-space cycle park at Cambridge station? What measures do you believe should be taken to ensure that construction starts soon? In the meanwhile what urgent measures should be taken to add to and improve the existing highly unsatisfactory cycle parking provision?

  7. Do you actively support the proposal to extend the Rustat Road footway to join the cycle bridge which has been approved by the Traffic Management Area Joint Committee? Will you make efforts to ensure that this is given priority because of the present difficulty caused by pedestrians walking in the cycle lane?

  8. Will you give your active support to the proposal to construct a proper cycle path linking Ashbury Close to Golding Road? This has been approved by the Traffic Management Area Joint Committee and is in our opinion particularly important for schoolchildren.

  9. Do you support rescinding the part-time ban on cycling in Fitzroy Street and Burleigh Street?

  10. In most terraced streets of Petersfield and Romsey, the public realm is dominated by parked cars. No space is made available for cycle parking, trees, and other amenities that would enhance the area. Car parking is squeezed into every available remaining space, yet there is a total absence of secure cycle parking. This inequity is one cause of the high levels of cycle theft in Cambridge. Would you support the introduction of on-street cycle parking racks on most such streets, even if it would mean the removal of one parking space on the street?

  11. Two-way cycling in one-way streets produces increased cycling safety and convenience, because it allows cyclists to avoid longer routes on busier roads. This is the norm in many European cities. Following the success of allowing two-way cycling using clear ‘No Entry Except Cycles’ signs in Petersfield, would you support opening all the streets in your ward to two-way cycling?

  12. We would like to see the Downing Street / Mill Lane route becoming the default priority direction at its junction with Trumpington Street. This would enable the high pedestrian and cycle flows to be catered for better. Do you support this idea?

  13. What do you think should be done, in addition to the measures already approved, to improve the poor walking and cycling environment on Mill Road?

  15. Gilbert Road currently includes cycle lanes that motorists can legally park in. This means that cyclists, including some of the many hundreds of children in nearby schools, have to dodge in and out of the traffic stream, which is dangerous and unpleasant. Given that Huntingdon Road has cyclist-only cycle lanes yet is a similar situation in terms of parking in front gardens, do you support the removal of on-street parking on Gilbert Road?

  16. What are your views on the current plans for the widening of the A14 which will remove the current (awkward, but at least possible) route for non-motorised users between the north of the village of Girton and Madingley?

  17. What are your views on cycling provisions for commuting into Cambridge from Cottenham, Histon and Impington? Are the existing facilities adequate (include reasons)? What do you think should be changed if anything?

  18. Do you support our proposal for ‘The Chisholm Trail’, a cycling super-highway that would run roughly along the railway, joining up the Science Park to Addenbrookes? This high-profile scheme would cut journey times, give people a genuine, realistic alternative to car use and help the city cope with the population increase which will take place in the coming years.
