# Question 1

There have been very few improvements for cyclists in Peterborough in recent years, and much of the existing cycle network dating from the 60s and 70s is falling apart. What will you do to change this?

Richard CHAM
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ed MURPHY
(Independent)

The current cycle ways need to be swept more often and when it snows the ice cleared. Links need to be improved between cycle ways across roads. The council needs to switch from spending far too much on new roads and spend this money on cycle routes and think about pedestrians too. I do have some cycleways in the ward which could be much more popular if they were better maintained. I’ve been cycling in the area since the 1970s when I was a school pupil. I also advocate 20mph is plenty zone for the entire residential area which will make cycling safer and more enjoyable. There are a few measures where we need hard cycle routes rather than just a line painted on the road.

# Question 2

Peterborough city centre is changing, with the Embankment, Fletton Quays, the Market, and Queensgate all developing – but there is still no legal cycle route through the heart of the city. What will you do to change this and help people of all ages and abilities travel safely across Peterborough?

Richard CHAM
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ed MURPHY
(Independent)

It’s so obvious to promote cycling and make it safe we need a cycle route right through the centre of Peterborough I think Bridge Street would’ve worked if it had been done properly. So I will advocate that this is looked at again or something as near to it as possible.

(Labour & Co-operative)

# Question 3

Between 2019-2021, Peterborough Cycle Forum worked with the City Council on ideas for the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP). Despite the Cycle Forum’s keenness to continue with this, it was stopped from meeting in May 2021 and work on the LCWIP seems to have stalled. How would you work to build strong links with local groups and communities to improve cycling?

Richard CHAM
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ed MURPHY
(Independent)

Quite frankly I would work with the green group and other progressives on the council to get the hierarchy right where pedestrians and cyclist or put before the car and money is moved accordingly. The council currently plans to spend millions yes Millions on new roads to access the embankment and what we need is something to be spent on pedestrians and cyclists . Was only a few years ago that they actually put a concrete wall up on the cycle right near Ravensthorpe running to the railway station anyway we protested directly and got it taken down because it was actually an illegal blockage.

Mohammed TOKIR
(Labour & Co-operative)

# Question 4

Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Road Safety Partnership (now the Vision Zero Partnership) aimed to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries to cyclists by 40% between 2015 and 2020, but it actually rose 2% during that time. Too many people are being hurt on our roads.

What do you think would most improve safety for people walking, cycling, using mobility aids and riding horses on the roads in your area? Which routes and junctions need the most urgent improvement?

Richard CHAM
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ed MURPHY
(Independent)

I think the police service should have some targets and keeping death off the roads should be one of them. This should focus the police service on employing traffic cops and doing more to reduce road accidents. Obviously design is important and working with the highways authority to manage out dangerous junction et cetera should carry on where possible.

# Question 5

In June 2021, the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority agreed to act on the Independent Commission on Climate’s recommendation to reduce car miles driven in the region by 15% by 2030.

Suggested actions needed to achieve this goal include installing safe cycle routes from new developments, working with employers to increase uptake in sustainable options for commuting, improving existing cycle infrastructure and encouraging the use of e-bikes. What changes do you think are needed to help people in your area reduce car mileage?

Richard CHAM
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ed MURPHY
(Independent)

The combined authorities suggestions are good but it does have a awful reputation for delivery. As I’ve said before initially making the current cycle roots more inviting by keeping them clean and safe and maintaining them properly will go a long way to encouraging their use. New cycle roots and hard routes and link roots would also enhance all this and we would be able to change the culture. In Ravensthorpe a 20 mph speed limit will also change the culture and encourage more people to walk and cycle and perhaps use the buses. Haven’t the combined authority let us down there we could’ve had a publicly controlled bus service operating by now. Through direct provision or franchising.

# Question 6

National charity Cycling UK's manifesto for English elections includes the following asks:

1: Create safe space for cycling: put the delivery of a connected network of routes at the heart of transport and development plans;

2: Improve delivery: ensure schemes meet the government’s cycle design standards laid out in LTN 1/20 and the Gear Change policy;

3: Make neighbourhoods more attractive for cycling & people: for example, by making 20mph the default for residential and shopping streets, and increasing secure cycle parking;

4: Enable rural & urban communities to cycle: integrate cycling and walking with public transport, make cycle training available for all and improve access to local green space.

Will you support this manifesto? What policies would you champion in your area to increase levels of walking and cycling?

Richard CHAM
(Liberal Democrat)

Ed MURPHY

Certainly will and have been campaigning for these measures.

# Question 7

What is your personal experience of walking and cycling in your area? What barriers do you think local people face that may prevent them from choosing active travel for everyday journeys?

Richard CHAM
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ed MURPHY
(Independent)

So a couple of years ago I decided to get rid of the car and revert to cycling everywhere I could. This is to confirm what I knew already but actually I’ve realised that the roads themselves are in a bad state round here and when I have to cycle on roads they are very uneven have quite a few holes of them and dangerous. Some of the pavements and shared cycle roots are pretty bad too and I’ve noticed people who are disabled having problem negotiating these and pavements too.
