# Question 1

Cambridge Cycling Campaign has created a guide to cycling best-practice called Making Space For Cycling, endorsed by all national cycling organisations. Do you fully support this guide, and if so, what one principle in it do you think could most effectively be applied in your ward?

Sam BARKER
(Conservative Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ray CARLOS
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Virgil IERUBINO
(Green Party)

I fully support this proposal. Greens want to see safer, better cycling support throughout the city, making cycling an even better alternative for more people. It is most important to have cycle paths that are clear, well maintained, and properly interconnected.

William KAMINSKI
(UK Independence Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Rosy MOORE
(Labour Party)

I fully support your guide but I'm not sure how to answer this question because I'm not clear what you mean by 'principles'. However in Coleridge I think enforcing the new 20mph speed limits, particularly on Lichfield and Coleridge roads would make a big difference and cycle priority at the side roads along Cherry Hinton road, where the cycle lane is on the pavement, with raised (same height as the pavement) crossings for the cycle path.
If money was no object I would have a cycle lane along Cherry Hinton Rd.

# Question 2

What measures would you like to see to improve the safety of children getting to school?

Sam BARKER
(Conservative Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ray CARLOS
(Liberal Democrat)

Virgil IERUBINO
(Green Party)

Traffic needs to be controlled more strictly in general, and especially around schools or areas where children play. Such areas need strictly enforced speed limits.

William KAMINSKI
(UK Independence Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Rosy MOORE
(Labour Party)

A better cycle lane along Cherry Hinton rd, either separate from the pavement (very costly), or with priority for the cycle lane over side roads.
Safer crossings at the junction with Queen Ediths way (not my ward but school children go up there to school)
A cycle path through from Ashbury Close to Goldings Rd. This is currently not for cycles but lots of children use it to get to school.
Drivers who park in their front gardens reversing into park so that when they drive out they can see children walking or cycling on the pavement.

# Question 3

What experience do you and your family have of cycling? Do you have any different concerns about younger or older family members cycling than you do yourself?

Sam BARKER
(Conservative Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ray CARLOS
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Virgil IERUBINO
(Green Party)

I started cycling fairly recently (previously I walked everywhere). It's a shame it took me so long, but I was worried about finding myself cycling in areas where it is not properly supported. While I have managed to make it work it could be so much better, and I worry that others may have more trouble.

William KAMINSKI
(UK Independence Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Rosy MOORE
(Labour Party)

I cycle to work and when I go out in town. All of my children cycle to school.
I used to have a Christiania bike which carried four children so I have been cycling my children around Cambridge since they were very young.Yes I worry about cycle safety for all of us

# Question 4

Secure cycle parking has been fixed in the short term at Cambridge Railway Station but is still a major problem for people travelling to work or to shop in the city centre. Where do you think that additional cycle parking can be provided in the city centre?

Sam BARKER
(Conservative Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ray CARLOS
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Virgil IERUBINO
(Green Party)

Cycle locking areas need to be placed wherever we see bikes being locked up against railings, posts, etc. The aim here is to make cycle as convenient as possible.

William KAMINSKI
(UK Independence Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Rosy MOORE
(Labour Party)

We just need more bike racks all over town. I recently went to Copenhagen and took lots of photos of all their lovely bike racks, which I can show you if you like. They also have little portable ones which shops and restaurants put out on the pavement when they're open. I thought that maybe we could encourage shops to do the same here.

# Question 5

Recent construction in the city, such as on Abbey Street, Milton Road and at the University Arms have closed routes or removed cycle space. What would you do to ensure that cycle routes remain open and safe as construction grows the city?

Sam BARKER
(Conservative Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ray CARLOS
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Virgil IERUBINO
(Green Party)

All new developments should have to explicitly consider their impact on cycling, and provide accommodations for this.

William KAMINSKI
(UK Independence Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Rosy MOORE
(Labour Party)

I would just request that space is kept for cycle lanes and pavements or at least safe through routes for both cyclists and pedestrians.

# Question 6

Cycle routes which are narrow and involves sharp turns and chicanes make routes difficult or impossible for users of tricycles, handcycles and cargo bikes, impairing accessibility for the most vulnerable. Can you think of anywhere in your ward that is difficult to use on a non-standard cycle and what will you do to improve it?

Sam BARKER
(Conservative Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ray CARLOS
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Virgil IERUBINO
(Green Party)

This comes down to how the roads and streets are maintained, and that question of how easy it would be to cycle here should always be considered.

William KAMINSKI
(UK Independence Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Rosy MOORE
(Labour Party)

I know!! My tricycle was very wide and I often couldn't even get onto cycle lanes. I can't think of anywhere in Coleridge like this but as cargo bikes and tricycles become more common I think that these need to be phased out

# Question 7

Protected junctions where pedestrian and bicycle traffic are fully separated from motorised traffic have been proposed by Cambridge Cycling Campaign for the Milton Road / Elizabeth Way junction. Which junctions do you think would benefit from this safety improvement within the Cambridge area?

Sam BARKER
(Conservative Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ray CARLOS
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Virgil IERUBINO
(Green Party)

Hills Road and East Road are very important routes for many, and the junctions on these can be quite dangerous for cyclists.

William KAMINSKI
(UK Independence Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Rosy MOORE
(Labour Party)

I am not really sure and would have to look into it further. Generally I'd love all the cycle lanes and junctions to be separated but unfortunately most roads in Cambridge are just too narrow, so we need to find solutions that work for all users.

# Question 8

Residential streets used by commuters to park all day for free increases traffic on already congested roads. This has an impact on cycle safety. It also means that residents of those streets may not be able to park cars outside or even near their own homes during the daytime. How would you solve this problem?

Sam BARKER
(Conservative Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Ray CARLOS
(Liberal Democrat)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Virgil IERUBINO
(Green Party)

This is a wider problem where we need to reduce traffic in general, control traffic into the city, incentivise alternatives, and so on, so that we don't have such an overflow of parking. Park and ride is an excellent solution for commuters that would reduce cars in the city. Finally, with local resident support, restricted parking areas for residents can be introduced.

William KAMINSKI
(UK Independence Party)
The candidate has not responded to the survey.
Rosy MOORE
(Labour Party)

This is quite a complicated issue and either needs a city-wide scheme such as a low-cost residents parking or it needs a street by street solution, combining residents parking, parking for restricted hours and yellow lines.
We also need to improve and reduce the cost of public transport so that we reduce the number of cars being driven and parked in the city
