Elections

List of questions

Here is a list of all the questions (across all divisions) we have asked for this election:

  1. There is a major shortage of cycle parking all around the city. Cycle theft is over 10% of all reported crime in the County. Do you have any suggestions for locations for cycle parking? Would you be willing to see a very small proportion of on-street car parking being replaced by on-street cycle parking in your ward? How will you progress towards a situation where every resident and every worker in each ward can keep a bike safe?

  2. Do you support our view that traffic policing (including fining of cyclists without lights or using pedestrian-only pavements) should become a greater police priority?

  3. We believe that 20mph should be the norm for local streets in residential areas (as distinct from main connecting roads). 20mph would: greatly encourage walking and cycling; improve the quality of life in an area for residents; and would not delay car journeys significantly (because only the start/end of a journey would be affected). Do you agree that 20mph should become the norm for local streets in Cambridge and surrounding villages?

  4. If the County Council's proposed Congestion Charge goes ahead, it is likely that the associated up-front money that would be received from the government to support prior improvements to public transport and cycling would be of the order of some £500m spread over five years. This is roughly ten times the amount the County currently receives for transport. If the scheme goes ahead, what would be your priorities for use of this up-front money?

  5. Do you have any other general cycling-related comments or points? And what support have you given for cycling and walking, or sustainable transport more generally, in the past?

  6. Hills Road Bridge has always been a very poor environment for cycling, with high speeds and aggressive traffic, and lack of on-road space. The County Council proposes a scheme involving one traffic lane uphill, and two traffic lanes downhill, in each direction, plus a 2.1m on-road ‘hybrid’ cycle lane on both sides. We think this represents national best practice and would lead to many more people feeling able to cycle here. Do you support the proposals in principle?

  7. Some cyclists have told us they feel unsafe riding alongside the two short stretches of Lensfield Road and East Road where car parking is allowed in spite of the heavy traffic. Such car parking narrows the space available considerably. Do you support removal of this car parking in the interests of improved traffic flow and the safety of cyclists?

  8. Do you agree that two-way cycling should normally be allowed in one-way streets, because of the way this can replace longer and more dangerous cycle routes with more direct routes? (This is the norm in many European cities and we are unaware of any evidence to suggest any significant danger.) In which locations in your ward would you support increased convenience and safety by allowing two-way cycling?

  9. As part of the Old Press / Mill Lane site changes, we would like to see the Downing Street / Mill Lane direction becoming the default priority direction at its junction with Trumpington Street. This would enable the high pedestrian and cycle flows to be catered for better. Do you support this idea?

  10. What do you think should be done to improve the poor walking and cycling environment on Mill Road?

  11. Gilbert Road currently includes cycle lanes that motorists can legally park in. This means that cyclists, including some of the many hundreds of children in nearby schools, have to dodge in and out of the traffic stream, which is dangerous and unpleasant. Given that Huntingdon Road has cyclist-only cycle lanes yet is a similar situation in terms of parking in front gardens, do you support the removal of on-street parking on Gilbert Road?

  12. What are your views on the current plans for the widening of the A14 which will remove the current (awkward, but at least possible) route for non-motorised users between the north of the village of Girton and Madingley?

  13. What are your views on cycling provisions for commuting into Cambridge from Cottenham, Histon and Impington? Are the existing facilities adequate (include reasons)? What do you think should be changed if anything?

  14. The Haling Way / Penny Ferry path is part of a national cycle route. Its entranceway is currently being remodelled, at considerable cost. We believe that a diagonal entrance into the path should have been created, rather than the current ‘wiggle’ round a blind corner and use of the pavement. This has not been done because it would involve removal of a few more car parking spaces. Do you feel that this cycle route should have a proper entrance for cyclists, even if it means the loss of three or four parking spaces?

  15. Coaches have been using Woodhead Drive to park overnight, often for a week at a time. The area is unsuitable for coach parking because of the obstruction caused, the dangers of using side roads for turning and the large numbers of cars that arrive to collect/drop off students. If elected, what would you do to stop coaches using Woodhead Drive, and to provide suitable alternative coach parking?

  16. We favour the removal of car parking on at least one side of Trumpington Road outside the Botanic Gardens. The current lanes are against government policy, as they are in the 'dooring zone'. Our proposal would allow wider cycle lanes and a buffer zone to protect cyclists from opened car doors . Do you support this?
