In our April/May 2001 Newsletter we reported on problems with newly-installed bus-shelters blocking shared-use pavements. Below are photos of most of the new shelters.
At that time we were negotiating with Cambridge City Council for the removal of the obstructions in the three worst cases – marked in bold below.
You can follow the story here with our thread of newspaper articles:
January 2002: Changes have been made to some of the shelters shown here. This page is being updated to show the changes made.
(Numbers in parentheses are the Council’s identification numbers)
Campkin Road – Jenny Wren pub (just south of St Kilda Ave junction)
Same design as the Cherry Hinton Road one, but interestingly it is on the kerb-side of the pavement.
5 January 2002: The back-panel has been filled in, so that people can’t walk out directly into the path of a cyclist.

Again, same design as the Cherry Hinton Road one, but interestingly it is on the kerb-side of the pavement.

Milton Road – Green End Road junction
This one is already causing the same problems for bus users as the new one outside Cherry Hinton Hall. One person waiting at the bus stop offered me her name and address in case the council wanted someone to confirm that it was a problem.
5 January 2002: The shelter has been replaced, so that there is no longer an advertisement blocking the view.

The warning sign appears to have been vandalised:

Milton Road – inbound – just south of junction with Union Lane
This one was not on the Council’s list, and I don’t understand why not.
Answer: it is only several years old, and not being replaced in the current programme.

If this one can be the cantilever design, why can’t the other ones in problematic locations? The difference in visibility is striking.

This one was on the Council list, but does not yet have a shelter. If it is going to acquire a shelter, it absolutely must be a cantilever one.
(We have been told by the Council that this will be an L-shaped one)

Cherry Hinton Road (Cherry Hinton Hall)
This is the one that was initially reported to us.
We originally said ‘the entire width available to cyclists is filled by the bus shelter, and visibility is completely blocked.’ The City Council has said that the markings here are just because of the nearby junction.
Nevertheless, visibility is completely blocked.
