Vehicles in cycle lanes: FoI exposes flawed DfT decision not to allow councils to enforce

Van in cycle lane

We’ve been pushing for several years for the Department for Transport to ‘enable’ a law passed in 2004 to enable Council parking attendants to ticket vehicles parking/driving in cycle lanes.

The DfT recently wrote to Councils, asking if they wanted such powers. The DfT decided not to go ahead, implying lack of demand. But our Freedom of Information request has shown there is very clear demand for these powers. We are calling on the DfT to reconsider, so that cyclists’ space is protected from illegal driving.
