Chesterton active travel group is a new grassroots campaign working for improvements in Chesterton for those walking, cycling and using mobility aids.
The group is open to everyone in the Chesterton community and supported by Camcycle staff, trustees and members who live in the area. Our aim is to work together on issues raised by local people and to get projects moving quickly with a combination of enthusiastic volunteers keen to make the area a better place and experienced campaigners who know the best ways to achieve success. Join us!
The group’s first meeting was held in the Haymakers pub on Thursday 1 August. Those attending collated ideas for walking and cycling improvements and discussed issues already raised at the Camcycle stall at the Chesterton Festival. We summarised the full list of ideas for improvements in Chesterton on our blog.
At our second meeting, we shared the things we loved and wanted to improve about Chesterton, discussed examples of previous active travel campaigns, discovered the skills and interests of those attending and prioritised the issues already raised. We then tackled the top four issues using a campaign change planner to work out which campaigning activities would help us achieve our aims. You can read the minutes from the meeting here.
The next meeting will be held in early December, date to be confirmed soon.
All are welcome to contribute to this group by sharing their ideas or volunteering to help. Camcycle members can join the discussion on our online forum, Cyclescape. Let us know where you think we should be focusing our efforts and how you can help us achieve our aims. You can also join us at our open community meetings in Chesterton, which we plan to hold every two months, or share your views via the Chesterton Babble facebook group.
