The next version of the design for Hills Road bridge – see
our newsletter article –
proposes a cycle lane between the two traffic lanes down each side of
the bridge. Why? – the need to create more space on the outbound side
after the new junction at the Brooklands Avenue end, which could be
achieved by removing the cycle lights and slip lane.
The idea also solves
signal delays to cyclists and gets them past queuing traffic. But
it’s a long way to have traffic on both sides (though the lanes are
much wider than anything we have seen in Cambridge before). And cars and
trucks have to cross the lanes.
