Installation of cycle parking: Sheffield stands

This is the preferred style of cycle parking for the majority of cyclists, and that recommended by both Cambridge City Council and South Cambs District Council.

  • Installing Sheffield stands too close together may only leave room for one bike per stand. For 2 bikes per stand, 1m separation is usual, 0.8m is the minimum.
  • On sloping ground, make sure that bike wheels will be level when parked, eg place across the slope.
  • In public spaces, the use of lumpy (“tactile”) paving will help blind and partially sighted people to avoid colliding with the stands.
