Camcycle and Enterprise Car Club unite to help members build a sustainable transport future

Camcycle has joined with Enterprise Car Club in a partnership which offers reciprocal benefits to the members of each organisation in order to support an increase in sustainable travel. Camcycle is offering existing Enterprise Car Club members a 20% reduction on individual and household memberships and Enterprise is offering Camcycle members a year’s car club membership for just £20, plus £20 driving credit. The discounts, which will apply for a year, aim to help people choose cleaner, greener modes of transport and raise awareness of the need for better options across the Cambridge region. Around half of people in Cambridge cycle at least once a week and there are currently over 40 Enterprise Car Club vehicles available in the area, but there is considerable potential for growth in both cycling and car club use.

Camcycle's Pip Emery and Roxanne De Beaux celebrate a new reciprocal membership discount with Tony Barnard from Enterprise Car Club. They are standing by the car club car on De Freville Avenue in Cambridge.

Research shows that each car club vehicle on the road replaces 20 private cars, helping to reduce carbon emissions, congestion and pollution and provide more space for people walking, cycling and wheeling. Car club members in the UK are more likely to choose cycling for some of their journeys than average, with 37% riding at least once a week (compared with 20% in the general population). Around 15% of Camcycle members are already using car club vehicles, and for those without access to a private car or looking to reduce the number of cars in their household it can be the ideal transport option to complement local walking and cycling journeys.

Camcycle trustee Pip Emery led the work on the partnership. She said:

I cycle regularly for practicality and pleasure, but I also find the use of an Enterprise Car Club vehicle useful for occasional use: they are the perfect complement to active travel in a place like Cambridge. The Camcycle Board of Trustees is delighted to offer this new benefit to our members and to offer discounted membership to Enterprise members in return. As we grow our campaign for Zero Carbon Streets, it’s important to work with partners on all aspects of a sustainable transport system for the future. Car clubs give people access to a vehicle when they need it, while freeing up valuable road space for better walking, cycling and wheeling.”

Tony Barnard from Enterprise said:

As an accredited member of the charitable organisation CoMoUK, Enterprise Car Club is always keen to support initiatives which help spread the social, economic and environmental benefits of shared and sustainable transport. We’re pleased to add Camcycle to our list of active travel partners and will work together to reduce private car ownership and use, while improving air quality. Our car club vehicles produce 27% lower emissions (PM2.5) than the average car and Cambridgeshire residents have a choice of electric, hybrid and fuel-efficient vehicles in a variety of convenient locations.”

Enterprise Car Club vehicles can be booked and unlocked with a phone 24/7 from transport hubs and residential locations in and around Cambridge. Rentals start from £3.28 an hour plus a small mileage fee. Car club membership includes fuel, servicing, MOTs, breakdown cover, damage protection and cleaning.
