Spot the difference

We have noted with considerable interest that the new mandatory cycle lane on Hills Road also contains double-yellow lines. I'm sure it isn't a coincidence that this cycle lane is respected by motorists considerably more than almost any other one in the city.

There should be no need to add double yellow lines inside mandatory cycle lanes, as motorists ought to know that it is illegal to park in them. However, many motorists, and seemingly even some Cambridge traffic wardens, are not aware of the distinction.

I think adding double yellow lines to mandatory cycle lanes could be a very economical way of reducing the scale of the problems posed by illegal parking.

Hills Road seems to have proved that this is both possible and effective. We will be asking whether the same can be done systematically throughout the city.
