Very uneven surface on Bridge St

The rising bollards in the Cambridge Retail park (presumably required by its planning consent) have apparently been out of action for months - the black car has just driven through.

A bike outside its comfort zone - being abused for this rather tacky advertising. The city council has a policy that A-boards have to be licensed - so some advertisers get around it by using bikes like this, but I don't think it does the ... [more]

Collapsing road surface in Cambridge

Shameful condition of cycle lane and road surface, Newmarket Road, Cambridge

Very wide splays at this junction, and the approach of big lorries from Mercer's Row make this an un-necessarily hostile environment.

See clip at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbTBjWRzH9c I'm riding along the westbound carraigeway of Bateman Street and come up behind a taxi ("VP55 YPV" license 332). At 6 seconds you can see a cyclist (with lights, my camera doesn't pi ... [more]

Building the Ring Fort Path requires a redesigned crossing here. http://www.camcycle.org.uk/campaigning/issues/ringfortpath/

Despite quite long anti-pedestrian surfacing this doesn't stop some determined people using this rail crossing of the river as a short cut.

Update: these lines were removed on night of 1/3/2012, so the problem is now resolved. Cycle lane repainted on night of 28/2/2012, and now goes right the way up to the roundabout instead of stopping short. See also: how it previously st ... [more]

Update: these lines were removed on night of 1/3/2012, so the problem is now resolved. This cycle lane was repainted on 28/2/2012 - it used to stop short of the roundabout. But it is so narrow at the end, and narrows so suddenly, it is n ... [more]

One of the traffic lights that used to face Chesterton Road (next to the Folk Museum in the photo) has been moved. It's now on the traffic island in Chesterton Road at a point where it is hard for pedestrians to see whether it's safe to cro ... [more]

The east end of Bateman Street is continuing to collapse.

Waiting to turn right into Purbeck Road from Hills Road, to get to the sixth form college. Road markings have disappeared and there's no central lane marking to help the hundreds of cyclists who need to make this maneouvre every day.

Turning right into Purbeck Road to access the cycle parking for Hills Road Vi form college. There's little in the way of road markings here, and those that are supposed to be present, such as the cycle lane in the foreground have all but di ... [more]

See video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNxv2hY6it8 The entrance to this cycle path is very limited and requires great care when coming onto and off the road. I need to cycle into the middle of the road to be able to take the corner, ... [more]

Narrow sidewalk leads to overflow pedestrians endangering cyclists. Previous to fencing in this area was relatively open car parking (Peugeot) which took some pressure from the sidewalk

What a shame that a cyclist by pass was not created in this build-out.

Vehicle stalled by parked delivery van. Even pedestrians and this cyclist had difficult passing.

Logistics at worst. This photo was taken the day before even longer trailers were permitted. How come we have a system that allows this, but bans southbound bikes here?

Left-only turn is not sensible at this exit from Addenbrooke's

Deep sloping gutter, massive high kerb. Why? just round the corner on the busway access is exemplary low kerb with drainage into the length of the kerb-stones.

Cyclists regularly cycle on the pavement here. This is the sensible and safe option it should be legalised. Also the lights on the road from the car park don't respond to a cyclist's presence. A left turn out should be permitted via a cycle ... [more]

Bell School development: where the entrance road should be but which the planners failed to require

Road environment near the Bell School development: cycle-unfriendly

Bell School development proposed entrance to the right

Bell School development proposed entrance - clearly unsuitable space for a major development

Bell School development proposed entrance - clearly unsuitable space for a major development

It's not at all clear, but cyclists should use the shared-use footway to the left rather than crossing next to the car trap to reach the cycleway.

Cyclists are supposed to use the shared-use footway to the left to reach the cycleway, but some will want to pass next to the car traps here.

Route signs needed for cyclists

Remodelled Riverside scheme - blind corner created

Remodelled Riverside scheme - plans showing the Priory Road junction

Give way markings are the wrong way round - a blind corner has now been re-created further up the road here!

See video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEMOdj6q20k A few years back this track was covered in a small thicket with a 1-2m wide track through the middle of it. Fine for riding and walking. Then, someone cut all the trees down, pro ... [more]

Cars (wanting to turn left into Union Lane) frequently block the bus & cycle lane on Milton Road. One of many reasons why Union Lane should be turned into a cul-de-sac (like Chesterton Hall Crescent).

Bollards in the Busway

See video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taEZuQdE4k4 This is always a trying time on a bicycle. The road to the right of me has straight on and left as roundabout options. You'd have thought most people would remember that they should ... [more]

Another view of sharp cornered kerb on new Riverside works.

Kerb on the new Riverside/Abbey Road works (Priory Street end). The photo doesn't show the height very well but it has the potential to be rather sharp if hit by a falling cyclist.

Its not uncommon to find people walking along the middle of the road in these streets, where parked vehicles, bins and street furntiure heed progress on the pavement.

Roadmarking on cycleway beside the A10 near Hauxton. Do cyclists really have to give way at this private driveway?

Just weeks after repairing the potholes on Summerfield, the council has decided to totally resurface this very minor dead-end street. The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing?

The "abandoned" section of Downhams Lane vandalised, lots of broken glas.

The obvious route for cyclists in Burwell - a shame it's one-way.

Holbrook Road - most of the spare road space is taken up in this area during the daytime as a kind of greater Addenbrooke's car park.

Every bit of spare road space is taken up in this area during the daytime as a kind of greater Addenbrooke's car park.

The verge is overun here by cars undertaking right turning traffic.

It'd be very easy to put in a cyclable link here.

The detectors at the traffic lights didn't seem to be detecting bikes in the cold weather.

Whenever I get caught-up at this set of signals, I always think "Why can't someone just erase the 1 m of stop line on the nearside of the road?". Alternatively (because some motorists may not be as anal about legislation as I am), a permane ... [more]

This is Hauxton Road, immediately south of the new junction with Addenbrooke's Road. Here, a filter lane from Addenbrooke's Road merges from the left. Cyclists riding from Trumpington to Hauxton now find themselves riding in the middle ... [more]

Puddling at the northern end of Grange Road; unrelated to the shoddy resurfacing of early October 2010. My mother occasionally says "it's the 21st century but we can't build cycle [lanes] that don't puddle". Location approximate.

Expertly shoddy resurfacing, Grange Road. The contractors appear to have left the cycle lanes out of a resurfacing job; perhaps they were trying to stay out of the mandatory cycle lanes. (Ho-ho-ho.) How about resurfacing the whole road (rea ... [more]

Poor condition of cycle lane, which should have been resurfaced with the rest in August 2010. The residual northbound cycle lane is about 80cm wide north of Herschel Road. I assume it would have been 90cm before the work done in August 2010 ... [more]

Northbound cycle lane on approach to Madingley Road. It is almost completely full of loose gravel following surface dressing in August 2010. Note that the advanced stop line and red box for cyclists at this junction has not been replaced af ... [more]

Typical condition of cycle lane here - very uneven, and more in need of resurfacing than the former road surface. There is a distinct ridge between the lane and the main carriageway, meaning care has to be taken to leave the lane.

Narrow and partially obliterated cycle lane containing loose gravel after surface dressing in August - former width visible. Just to add insult to injury, look where the roadworks sign has been placed.

This section of road was partially resurfaced in July 2010, but has not been repainted properly. Double yellow lines are missing, as is the cycle lane through the pinch point, which used to match #25319.

Mess of signage and visual stimuli on Coral Park. The bollard was in the down position, and the gate behind the photographer open, so this could be used as a through route by motor vehicles.

Cycling on this deserted pavement is preferred to the busy road by this rider. Cycle ride from Cambridge to Histon, through King's Hedges and Arbury.

Station Road has been quite well repaired - but the red ASL has totally vanished, so this driver cannot really be blamed for stopping in it.

A right-turn lane leading to a short dead-end road - wouldn't the space be better used for a contraflow cycle lane?

Bus delayed for half a minute while a PCL lorry delivers a grand total of three trolleys of milk to Tesco East Road, blocking most of one side of the road.

Bus waiting to drive round a PCL lorry delivering to Tesco East Road blocking most of one side of the road.

Deliveries to Tesco from a lorry with the 'PCL' logo on the side. The delivery is perfectly legal, but the Council should disallow unloading in this location and require Tesco and other shops to unload from the delivery bay at the back.

Unloading on East Road with large lorries causes problems for cyclists and other traffic.

Closed again. Evidently over the weekend a motor vehicle has crashed into the rising bollard here and shed oil over the road. I was forced to use the unsatisfactory cycle bypass for the first time!

The Sepia site, next to CUP - a typical upmarket development with cars out and proud in front of the front doors, and bikes hidden away out of sight.

A straight road will entice motorists to speed. Reducing the forward view through alternating parking bays with the lane winding between the sides of the road is an effective measure for speed reduction which does not require altering the k ... [more]

With the bridleway flooded and icy on both sides of the busway in this area users wanting to get through are forced to walk or cycle on the trackway.

One of the most heavily pedestrianized streets in the centre of Cambridge is still a slippery ice-sheet at the end of a winters day. How hard would it have been to find some people to clear this?

steady as she goes... arctic conditions on Riverside

A postman pushing a delivery trolley down the middle of the road - because the pavements have been taken over by parked cars, bikes and wheelie bins.

At Thriplow Village Hall and Village Stores the only cycle parking is on these railings.

Sudden end of footpath past Duxford airfield - this needs to be shared-use for cycling and extended to the Thriplow turn.

The path along the A505 past Duxford airfield urgently needs to be made shared-use for cycling.

Not only is cycling not allowed, it seems even pedestrians aren't allowed on the path! See also #31783

Drop kerbs needed on the M11 slip roads at Duxford. And surely the 'No Pedestrians' sign should be with the 'National Speed Limit' sign, on the far side of the footway?

Drob kerbs needed at the M11 slip roads at Duxford

There's no reason for this short link to be one-way for cyclists.

There's a car trap on one side of the guided busway, but not on the other...

Another new development with bikes locked to railings due to the usual car-focussed planning process.

Another car-dominated development with no visible cycle parking.

A Home Zone in Cambridge - but the usual car-dominated streetscape, with no sign of cycle parking.
