Cycle parking

Interesting dual ASL

Cycleway along Botofogo beach, Rio - with no ramp to the underpass (partly due to the need for flood barriers). What seem to be Sheffield stands are to stop vehicles driving towards the beach - there is in fact cycle parking (similar to #15 ... [more]

None of our 'Cyclists Dismount' nonsense in Rio - just 'Danger' and deal with as well as you can.

Dual-carriageway cycle track from Botafogo towards Copacabana - for once it's the pedestrians who have trees in their way.

These twin tunnels from Copacabana to Botafogo have pedestrian walkways on their outer sides (out of shot) and one-way cycle ways on their inner sides, by the No Entry to Pedestrians signs.

There's a Vélib-style bike rental scheme on Copacabana beach - unfortunately you need to register online first.

Cycle parking at the end of Ipanema beach - there's a hole for a lock through the vertical posts. You don't often see a pair of flippers hanging from the handlebars in Cambridge!

Cyclists arriving at Ipanema beach on the cycle track from Copacabana.

Cars (and policeman) waiting for the 10am end of tidal flow (eastbound only) along the Ipanema beachfront dual-carriageway.

Two-way cycle (and rollerblade etc) track along the Ipanema beachfront - this extends north the length of Copacabana to Botafogo and Flamengo. It's Monday morning in Rio, but it feels like a weekend!

Priority to pedestrians (ie joggers) on the circuit around Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Ipanema.

Jogging and cycling track around the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, Ipanema, Rio (that's Corcovado in the background) - the whole circuit is apparently 7.5km long.

This cyclist went from Copacabana to Ipanema entirely on the footways - these are prosperous areas where they've imported trendy northern-hemisphere ideas like mountain bikes and, err, riding anywhere but on the road.

Copacabana and Ipanema, like many Rio neighbourhoods, are linked by tunnels - no facilities for cyclists or pedestrians, but plenty of buses.

Bicycle parking (hanging) at a Rio de Janeiro metro station.

The Rio de Janeiro metro - the emphasis seems to be on getting people to cycle to the station, rather than taking bikes on trains (in the small print it mentions that they're allowed on Sundays and holidays only).
