One technique that is sometimes used to steal bikes is to lock a bike to another one. The miscreant comes along later at a quieter time of day, cuts through the other lock and takes both bikes away. This is called 'over-locking'. I don't ... [more]
Bikes often fall over when locked to 'Sheffield' style stands. This happens because as the neighbouring bikes are parked and unparked the bike is jostled and the cycle lock works its way down the leg of the stand.
Bikes crammed into this staircase area off St. Edward's Passage - which was recently developed with some lovely old wooden beams.
Brand new Sheffield stands in front of the Chemistry department, already in use although the access hasn't been finished yet.
High capacity cycle parking. This type of rack was called the "Triangle 10" as marketed by Falco (here purchased in 2001). Ten years later this link shows they're still being sold: http://www.falco.co.uk/products/cycle-parking/cycl ... [more]
Some of the older style cycle parking at Chesteron Community College. Not as secure, but at least its got a roof (even though that seems to be made of asbestos).
There's a clear need for some official cycle parking here as there are always bikes against the railings throughout the year. However the railings do make quite good cycle parking and add to the image of an informal urban environment.
Full to overflowing - Park Street Cycle Park, which has a capacity of 300 bikes is now so full that other railings in the car parking area are being used to accommodate bikes.
The only covered cycle parking hidden right at the back of this otherwise attractive new housing development.
Cycle parking at the Trumpington guided bus stop (northbound stop out of sight to the right)
On board a guided bus - pretty much like any other single-decker bus on the inside. There's just enough luggage space for one Brompton behind the seat on the other side, and on this side there's a Giant Halfway (20 inch wheel folding bike) ... [more]
High capacity cycle racks outside the City Council's offices ... where simple sheffield style racks would have been fine. These racks are more suited to locations where there is lack of space. They separate the handlebars, hold the front ... [more]
These Sheffield stands are spaced in a way that only one bike can be fitted between stands. They leave about half the required space between stands.
Packing more Sheffield stands into a limited space reduces the number of bikes that can be parked. These stands leave about half the required space between stands.
It is always good to see cycle parking with Sheffield stands under a roof! Packing more Sheffield stands into a limited space reduces the number of bikes that can be parked. These stands leave about half the required space between stands.
Bikes occupying the space outside the Kingston Arms that could usefully be provided for cycle parking.
It looks like the building works in this area are nearing completion, but are the racks that were in front of these bollards (See #2193 and #10821) going to be re-instated? Ah, yes they have been: #30984. Many thanks and well done!
New cycle parking outside offices at the junction of Bateman St and Hills Rd (see also #28755, in the car park).
Another photo showing the cycle park under the Grand Arcade in Cambridge full to overflowing. See also #29297 and
The well used cycle racks here are unusally rather generously spaced out here. The number of racks could probably be doubled.
Bicycle parking under the Grand Arcade: chock-a-block full in March 2011 and its humble beginnings three years earlier #13157

Bicycle parking under the Grand Arcade: chock-a-block full in March 2011 and its humble beginnings three years earlier #13158
New office building on corner of Bateman St and Hills Road, with a not especially generous amount of cycle parking.
Cycles parked outside the Fort St George (which seems to have lost its 'in England' suffix).
Bicycle parked inside the Grand Arcade under threat to be removed by the shopping centre's security guards.
The out of the way cycle parking in the distance is not used, but racks nearby are overflowing.
Wolfson Court Self-limiting cycle parking. This simple fence has gaps just wider than a bicycle tyre. When empty it fills up loosely as people take plenty of room. But when it runs out of space bikes get crammed into the narrow gaps that ... [more]
The Missing Sock is making a good effort to welcome cyclists - well worth a visit - its quite a lively and unusual place.
Bike racks at Hills Road Sixth Form College near the Purbeck Road entrance. Not enough for such a large number of pupils but it's certainly a good start.
Cycle (and motorcycle) parking at the Square & Compass, Great Shelford. Sorry about the sun glare.
Slightly pixlelated photo of the new bike rack (a Falco Triangle, apparently) outside Mandela House.
One of the new racks outside Mandela House. The other bike rack was being used as a bench. See also #24353
New cycle parking on the London side of Foxton station. As you can see, the A10 gets very clogged-up when the barriers are down.
Cycles are often parked on this island separating the contraflow cycle lane from other traffic on Emmanuel Street; this shows the lack of proper cycle parking in the area.
Cycle parking at Marshalls, Cambridge airport (replacing the tumbledown shed in #7847 and #7848) - covered, but not a lot of it!
Inside the cycle shed at the Sepia development - decent enough, but it'll soon be overflowing.
Inside the cycle shed at the Sepia development - decent enough, but it'll soon be overflowing.
Cycle shed at the Sepia development - a simple latch on the door rather than a swipe card which you might expect in a classy development like this.
Cycle stands have reappeared opposite the Arts Theatre, outside the new Jamie's Italian restaurant - but why do they have to be these cheap bolt-down stands which only support the front wheel, rather than proper Sheffield stands? See als ... [more]
Limited cycle parking by the new access from the Coton cycletrack to the Cavendish Lab and the West Cambridge site.
Decent enough cycle parking at the Botanic Garden. The only problem is that this is no longer the entrance.
Only four stands at the County-run Great Shelford Library. Why couldn't they have just mirrored these four on the other side of the doorway's desire line? -- then there'd be eight (16 spaces, two on each stand).
Lots of stylish (but slightly impractical) cycle parking at the rear of the Faculty of Education.
