Pot hole directly in cycle path - remains unfixed despite complaints to council. Cyclists have to swerve into path of traffic to avoid.
What happens when there's not enough cycle parking: people park several spaces abreast, and bikes fall over. In this case, this is done to excess. And so bikes end up in the path of passing vehicles, with wheels being flattened.
The scene greeting visitors to Cambridge on their way from the railway station. An acute lack of secure cycle parking leads to bikes parked insecurely to the wooden railing, with the result of this vandalism. Eleven years later #37644 th ... [more]
Worst possible provision: pavement cycleway where motor vehicles constantly cross or park on the footway.
Mandatory Cycle Lane on East Road. Car parking on lay-by invades MCL with rear wheel right on top of the bicycle painted on the floor. This is the part where bicycle remerge onto the road from the pavement. The obstructing car (number plate ... [more]
East Road, 8 March 2007, 3:25 pm. Number plate N146 KVG, reported to police with reference 423. On this occasion the car was on the double yellow line.
Cars are allowed to park Mon-Sat daytime for 30 min in this lay-by on East Road. This car was reported for invading the MCL to police tel. 08454564564 [#8157] on 1 Mar 2007 at 3:15 pm and at 5.41 pm again.
This is where cars often park invading pavement and the mandatory cycle lane on East Rd (Newmarket Rd roundabout), forcing cyclist into the car lane. This bay was designed as a bus stop, not parking.
Even a double yellow line does not always stop motorists. This picture was taken one day two after Ian Greasley forwarded message to the "Local Authority Parking Enforcement" (LAPE) office at Cambridge City Council.
When cyclists have to steer around the obstructing cars they are in danger of being hit by accelerating cars coming out of the Newmarket Road roundabout. The double yellow line needs to extend to the point where the dis-used bus stop is wid ... [more]
East Road. Cyclists leaving the subway cycleway bypass round the Newmarket Rd roundabout have to stear around street furniture. This rainy day Mr Mondeo took care of blocking the dropped kerb, despite of the big bicycle painted right in fro ... [more]

Dismounting on a cycleway. For drivers this is the equivalent of having to get out of your car and push! This obstruction badly lets down the Cambridge South East Cycle Route - which was built in the early 1990s as an alternative the the b ... [more]
These parasol type hanging 'designer' cycle parking, known as 'meathooks', were so unpopular they were replaced after only a few months.
Roadworks sign - was anyone aware that this would force cyclists into the path of oncoming taxis from the station, SUVs from St Mary's school etc ?
The infamous East Road layby - the new broken white line has helped but it was quickly worn away and infringements began again - now I see it's been repainted. Maybe it'll last longer this time!
Red car W516 VOJ reported to police at 4:45 pm as incident 0403 / 02102007. This vehicle is a regular culprit: #11515, #11517 and #11638. Note: Many obstructions on the pavement. Confusing layout for cyclists.
Elizabeth Road / Milton Road roundbout. Shared use pavement signate at Highworth Avenue is confusing.
Over-grown bypass lane on 60mph section of road! The Fulbourn 30mph zone should be extended beyond the pinch-point, and the bypass lane kept clear. Reported to County Council.
Opportunistic cyclists use the skip as a temporary place to park while visiting the pub opposite.
In front of "Anglian Home Improvements" inconsiderate parking in part on MCL, part pavement, part double yellow line, part over the dropped kerb for cyclists causes an obstruction. The double yellow line goes way underneath the car N982 SDW ... [more]
Inadequate cycle parking at Tesco, Newmarket Road. Note: There is a fundamental problem with the design of these particular 'toastracks'. The rails on the toast-rack are spaced such that one of the bike wheels has to 'sit' on the top of ... [more]
Cars are allowed to park Mon-Sat daytime for 30 min in this lay-by on East Road, which is designated on our Traffic Regulation Orders and by signage on site as a maximum waiting parking place. This one invades the MCL and stands on the "cyc ... [more]
The switch from shared use pavement cycleway to on-street mandatory cycle lane on East Rd (Newmarket Rd roundabout). This part of the Ring Road is an important cycling route, but poorly designed and often obstructed. Signs are confusing and ... [more]
The dis-used bus stop is too narrow, cars park on the pavement with one side and obstruct the mandatory cycle lane on the other. This picture was taken on day two after Ian Greasley forwarded message to the "Local Authority Parking Enforcem ... [more]

Vehicle J835EHD, of Sheppard's Removals & Storage, parked illegally and totally inconsiderately in the cycle lane, creating much danger, just before 10am on 14th November 2006. Note the cyclist about to face an oncoming bus, and the bloc ... [more]
Victoria Avenue Toucan Crossing 2. The poles on the Midsummer Common (East) side make for a very tight turn onto the shared pavement, often in the face of people coming the opposite way. Unsurprisingly, many people follow the path ta ... [more]
A ridiculous situation in Regent Terrace. Supposed to be a main walking and cycling route to the centre from the Station area, this is in fact a dangerous and hostile car park.
A knock-on effect of delivery vehicles waiting to enter the Grand Arcade is that other traffic then drives along the mandatory contraflow cycle lane. Proper marshalling of traffic, both delivery vehicles and their consequences, is needed to ... [more]
This is an area of high levels of cycle theft. Yet not a single cycle parking stand is available, despite literally hundreds of insecure bikes being left against walls. Car parking on the opposite site of the road should be selectively remo ... [more]
Dropped kerb and proper surfacing into Tesco needed, to serve this obvious cut-through. What actually happened was that a big fence was put in instead... see #12581.
Milton Rd southbound, corner with Union Lane. (For Taxi PJ55 YLY, plate no. 204 see also #15858 and #15964)
Nowhere to park bikes here (officially), but such an obvious need, and there\'s plenty of space.
Pram arms on the cycleway (note the cycle symbol on the ground and the directional signage in the distance.)
Pram arms on bollards, and then a fence. They really don't want you to get past here, and the graffiti says "Time to die".
Hopeless wheelbender cycle parking! The front wheel was locked to the rack, but the rest of the bike has gone. Often a front wheel of another bike will have been purloined to make up a whole bike.
Cyclists are supposed to use the pedestrian crossing 30 metres to the right and return to the same choke point - so that pedestrians can use the cycle crossing? Hardly logical.
The cattle grids are a huge improvement over the old pinch stiles that used to prevent cattle from wandering off the commons. However, in a step backwards, the barriers have recently been fitted with these arms, jutting out into the path. T ... [more]

The racks here are badly positioned so that in order to park securely, it can be necessary to lift your bike over into position.
At entrance to cattle grid for the bridge - the gateway has been deliberately narrowed by the Council. It's now dangerously narrow especially for trailers. Please explain what this is trying to achieve - and then remove it! Thanks
Both cattle grids for the entrance/exit from Trumpington Road traffic lights are partially obstructed by temporary fencing. This isn't safe for cyclists at this busy junction because it significantly narrows the grids and there is no warnin ... [more]
See clip at http://youtu.be/ACRXCcwGKrk Again, this is more of a criticism of the poor road layout here. It's designed to take drivers into the cyclelane. The worn paintwork shows testimony to this. This junction was designed a couple of ... [more]

Weston doesn't seem to be too impressed by the building permission application process.
Area between "greens gym" and railworks, which is at a different level. The area between the fence and the railswork building looks like an embankment, where it may be difficult to get a cycleway through.
The rising bollards in the Cambridge Retail park (presumably required by its planning consent) have apparently been out of action for months - the black car has just driven through.
The whole of Hobson Street is falling apart due to heavy buses - with loose gravel here.
The familiar false dichotomy - cars or pedestrians - ignoring the fact that this is above all a cycle route.
Good new road environment on the Riverside, but the council hasn't got around to adding Except Cycles plates to the No Through Road signs - even though this is National Cycle Network routes 11 and 51.
I took a very similiar photo to this, in this location 11 years ago, see #9351. The main difference between the two is that the new fence doesn't have gaps, presumably to discourage using that for bike parking.
At the southern bridge at Barnwell Junction the Chisholm Trail runs into a wall. Is drilling an archway an option? The northern bridge has one see #37480. For a view south towards Coldhams Lane >> #37476 <<
See clip at http://youtu.be/5ayfT4AoJ7E Water was 4-6 inches deep. Not something a walker would go through, and cyclists ought to beware as well. Surely this isn't difficult to fix?
Experimental double decker cycle parking at Cambridge station. Handlebars clashing making it hard to get rack back into place with bike on it.
Pothole reported to Fillthathole on 6 May; two weeks later the county was resurfacing Eltisley Avenue and Lammas Land (100m to either side) and I emailed to ask for this to be filled too. Too much to ask, of course.
Relegated and useless this discarded cycle parking adds a note of decay to this industrial estate's car park.
A bit of a squeeze due to no fewer than five over-ranking taxis - and the bus drivers are rather less considerate than this truck driver. Maybe a camera here coupled with the regulatory system for taxi drivers now being consulted on might h ... [more]
Roadworks on East Road have necessitated shifting this crossing temporarily to the left by about 20 metres. But that is so off the beaten track that it is universally ignored.
A bike outside its comfort zone - being abused for this rather tacky advertising. The city council has a policy that A-boards have to be licensed - so some advertisers get around it by using bikes like this, but I don't think it does the ... [more]
No more cycling posties in Newnham! Instead a van is parked here by the letter box and the driver and a colleague deliver mail on foot. It's hard to see that this is more economical.
