12338Photo #12338Wonderful plate on the wall of the Youth Hostel. Reads:

"This youth hostel is one of many, both in this country and abroad, where young people regardless of race or creed, may spend the night.

The buildings are diverse in character but they have a common purpose: to help all, especially young people of limited means, to a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside."

12288Photo #12288Bridge architect, Chris Dunn, shown here told me that the main span is 36m to the top of the support pillars. The pillars are at a sharp angle and so the span to the bases is 40m. The overall span of the bridge includes 100m across the flood plain, the main arch and the ramp on Riverside, totalling 200m.

You can watch the video by clicking on the photo or on the little play button below the photo, above.

If you watch the video, and listen carefully you can hear the moment when the bridge drops into place.

Some computers can't play the above video, so I have provided this alternative. If you can play .ogg files (see www.vorbis.com if you can't) try this higher-resolution version (25MB):
