30482Photo #30482There's a missing drain cover here - which being so close to the edge of the cycleway could be nasty.

The Highways Dept. at County have responded quickly on this and are sending an emergency team out to fix it, which is very much appreciated. (However this was not done by the time of the ride #30584).

Presumably this cover has been stolen for it's metallic value.

This cyclist caught some loose grit on the 90 degree turn here and threw her hand out to break the fall.

The top sign spells out in detail some archaic by-law that 'CYCLES MUST ONLY USE THE SPACES PROVIDED' blah blah blah. The main poster (which is now quite old and faded) announces CYCLE REMOVAL - a mass extermination policy designed to intimidate anyone daring to cycle the the railway station.

The railway company is effectively putting up a big sign here saying WE HATE CUSTOMERS WHO TURN UP ON A BIKE.

30276Photo #30276Cycle Route Planner: Adding lines

This screen cast was made in 2006 and demonstrates the original 'route editor' that we used back then to contstruct a routing network.

This was previously hosted on Google video (where it had 91 views) who seem to be closing that service now.

(Sorry about the very low quality - I never did get on top of how to configure the screencast software properly.)

30252Photo #30252During these ongoing works to add a promenade to Riverside the gate has been left ajar to allow cyclists to pass.

My reading of the map sign shown at #30251 tells me that two cattle grids will be installed, and a pedestrian gate.
Cycleway:
Good practice

30251Photo #30251I think its really helpful to have such a detailed map of the ongoing works at this location - despite the grafiti in the 'comments section' of this sign.

The big red arc next to the river is for pedestrians only, cyclists approaching from the left will have to go along the road to the right of the Elizabeth Way pillars and then turn left through the green area to join the roadway there. That bit of riverside will become a dead-end for cars, so the whole junction which has been quite unsatisfactory could become much better.

30250Photo #30250This is the reaction I had today from the operator of this lorry when I took this photo of him while he was transferring pallets of bricks over the cycle path. The pallets were being lifted off one end of the lorry or trailer and being swung round over the cycle path - in the photo you can see a strut coming out of the left side of the lorry onto the path. Normally I would expect such procedures to require closing the cycle path and for barriers to be placed to protect the public.

He shouted at me from the controls of the crane, parked the crane, got down and is shown running towards me demanding that I delete the photo.

He claimed that I was 'violating his human rights' by taking a photo of him, and that he was going to call the police. I said I'd be happy for the police to be called.

His reaction clearly demonstrated to me that he knew he should not be operating his vehicle over the pavement cycleway here. He called me a name and was initially very threatening and intimidating.

I have blurred out the face and the details on the lorry. I am not planning to take the issue further as my hope is that he'll realise that there is a proper place for moving goods around. But I shall follow it up if I see this happening again.

Feedback from a viewer says:
"I'm not sure that closing the path and erecting barriers is necessary with
the traffic level being fairly low, although an assistant would probably be
a good idea to ensure safety - BUT he should certainly have used a pad under
the jack leg to protect the surface of the path."

30171Photo #30171Roy Pegram cuts the (recycled) ribbon to declare the Tins Bridge officially open at last!
A small group of councillors (it is election time soon), council officers and cycling campaigners were among the group of onlookers.
The project engineer explained to me why the bridge didn't fit in the first place (see #29032). Apparently the measured angle was 41 degrees (between the crossing line and the centre line of Burnside) but the bridge was built with a 'skew angle' of 49 degrees.
The angle used to measure the length of the bridge was 41 degrees, but it was built with an angle of 49 - which made it too long. I don't know if it is a co-incidence that 49 + 41 = 90.

But it is lucky the error was that way round as otherwise the bridge would have been too short!
