How to add a photo
More photos can help our campaign by illustrating the problems that people face when trying to navigate the city by bicycle.
- To use the Add Photo form you will need a user account.
- All .jpg format photos up to a max size of 12M will be accepted.
- See licensing for details of how your photo will be used on our site.
- On successful submission the original photo is archived and a copy generated suitable for presenting on web pages.
- You will be taken to a web page where you will be prompted to state exactly where and when the photo was taken. Some of the information (such as date and time) can usually be taken from details in the photo. See help on locating a photo.
- Once located your photo is renamed according to a media naming convention that allows it to be identified in space and time, and indexed on a map. Each photo has a unique ID which is a compact way to refer to them in web links.
How to Locate a photo

Setting the bearing helps journey planner choose storyboard photos aligned with direction of travel.
- After successfully uploading a photo you are taken to a Locate Photo page.
- This page askes for very detailed information about where the photo was taken.
- As a minimum you need to click on the map to set the longitude and latitude, and also specify the subject and bearing. Most of the other information will probably be right.
- Please try and be as accurate as possible when locating photographs as they will be picked up by the journey planner and used to create a storyboard of a journey. In particular the bearing of the photo is important here - this is the direction the camera was pointing when the photograph was taken. The direction the cyclist is travelling and the bearings of nearby photos are consulted to choose the most appropriate images for the storyboard.
Photomap tips
- In your photo cations, create links to other photos by prefixing the photo number with #, for instance #11398. This will then appear as #11398 on the photmap page.
- References to pages that begin with http://www.camcycle.org.uk/map/ will also be converted to links.
- Type a number in the search box and click the Photosearch button to go directly to the photo with that number, if it exists.
Your Safety
Please be very careful when taking photographs of people, especially those who may appear to be committing an offence. Some people will take exception to this and may ask you to stop. Some contributors to Photomap have been threatened and even been physically assaulted as a result of taking photographs. If this does happen to you we do encourage you to report the matter to the relevant agency, usually the Police, though they will need independent witnesses.
- Legality? - see this BBC news article about taking photos in public places. [April 2008]
