"But Grantchester! ah, Grantchester! There's peace and holy quiet there" - Rupert Brooke
Dangerous railings in a Dutch town. This is Oosterwolde in Friesland, an example of the "shared space" ideas of Hans Monderman. There are plenty of signs, railings like I've seen nowhere else over here, and more cars than usual for the N ... [more]
East Road. Cyclists leaving the subway cycleway bypass round the Newmarket Rd roundabout have to stear around street furniture to the dropped kerb, around illegally parked cars - avoiding collision with cars coming from the roundabout.
Very poor surface condition on Coton side of cycle path over M11. It's been like this for years, but this is the first time I had a camera to hand. With the opening of Coton Countryside Reserve, people are encouraged to cycle to the reserve ... [more]
Buses get stuck in traffic because of the sheer number of private motor vehicles, most of them containing a single occupant. A good demonstration of why congestion charging is needed.
Milton Road crossing with Arbury Road. No Advanced Stop Line, no cycle lane. Left-turning traffic is given green light while cyclists wait in limbo. Very poor layout, very intimidating. Not "Cycling Demonstration Town" material...
Would it be helpful to put in a dropped kerb here instead of this short section of standard kerb?
This is an obvious, natural link from the Industrial area to the estates east of the North Road. The existing uncontrolled crossing is bizarrely off line, introducing inconvenience for the sake of it. All of that guard railing gives o ... [more]
Hatching emphasises that this is a space for vehicles, not for people. Use more creative measures like different surfacing, visually narrowing the width, junction tables, removal of centerlines and priority markings etc to create a more ... [more]
The Berlin wall. There is no connection between these two estates that back onto each other. When new housing is built it MUST be porous to walking and cycling, encouraging short trips to be made without cars.
"Find your way to a sustainable business" A truly splendid conference invitation for "Sustainability Live". Note the back cover showing how to get there, mainly by car or aeroplane. If there is cycle access, they're not letting on. ... [more]
Cars come round this corner quite fast (after all, it is a one way road), but where the picture is taken from is a T-junction where vehicles, including cycles, need to turn right onto this road, across the flow. Better visibility is needed ... [more]
More unfinished infrastructure. Access to these dwellings is across a poorly finished dropped kerb and a patch of mud! Not conducive to cycling for those people already living here.
Drainage problems causing large puddles at the eastern end of the closed section of Riverside.
Regent Street pinch. Vehicles overtake this bus who has stopped to hand over drivers. Cyclists then have to vie with oncoming buses and lorries in what is left of the road width.
No access for cyclists to the Coffin Road, a footpath from north of Ambleside to Rydal and Grasmere that is a wide gravel track throughout.
Scandale Bridge, north of Ambleside, start of the Coffin Road footpath to Rydal and Grasmere - cyclists are not welcome.
Miller Bridge, Ambleside - cycling is not allowed on the footpath ahead, which would be an ideal cycle route into the town centre.
Bikes must be pushed through the Parc Villemin in Paris - a shame there isn't a proper cycle track, as it's a key link between the Gare de l'Est (and the Gare du Nord) and the cycle route along the Canal Saint Martin.
Opportunist coach parks in Miller Homes visitor's car park. Manoeuvring into here must cause delays on Woodhead Drive.
Boxed in! The only areas allocated for cycle parking seem to be where its not possible to have a car parking space, such as behind this tree next to the recycling area. Riders will have to struggle every morning to get these exposed c ... [more]
This slip lane for vehicles turning left into Northfield Avenue from Kings Hedges Road is due to be removed as part of changes to this junction agreed by the Area Joint Committee
This slip lane from Kings Hedges Road into Northfield Avenue allows motor vehicles to turn left at high speed. The AJC has voted to remove it and return it to verge.
Looking south down Northfield Avenue, just to the south of the junction with Kings Hedges Road. Cyclists are expected to rejoin the road here but the sweeping slip lane into Northfield Avenue means cars are often moving very fast here. Th ... [more]
There used to be so much cycle parking here, on both sides of the road. Why oh why does the council care so little about cycle theft and convenient access? Is it totally in thrall to the developers and the bus companies?
Surely there's room for cycle parking here - if only the council could be bothered to enforce its own cycling parking standards!
Bicycle Rock - where there were 40 odd spaces for cycle parking (see #2597) there is now a rock. I predict this will be used heavily to lean bikes against for parking.
Scenes during the Mill Road Winter Fair 2007: large numbers of people walking but car traffic still dominating the area. Perhaps Mill Road should be shut to through-traffic on the day of the fair, to prevent this atrociously poor pedestrian ... [more]
Problem associated with the ice rink on parkers piece - all the vehicles have churned up the park here creating a hazard for walkers and cycling. UPDATE: We've received assurances that these items will be dealt with [22 Nov, 4pm]
Papworth bypass, opened spring 2007 (and not yet on this map) - there's a parallel route for horses but nothing useable by bikes, which sums up the attitude of rural Cambs voters and councillors.
If buses turn left from Downing Street they are likely to over-run the Advanced Stop Box for cyclists
Two cars encroaching the MCL at a dangerous spot with heavy traffic. The driver of the blue Vauxhall Zafira EJ03 MKE works at Anglia Home Improvements at this location and is "a regular" on this MCL.
Sub standard 1.2 m wide cycle lane further reduced by change in surface at the yellow lines (up to 2cm high). Councillor Ian Nimmo-Smith: "This is quite poor".
Pedestrian crossing on Chesterton Rd, between Hamilton Rd and George Street. Dangerous new kerb. To see from the opposite side: http://www.camcycle.org.uk/map/location/thumbnails.html
