One technique that is sometimes used to steal bikes is to lock a bike to another one. The miscreant comes along later at a quieter time of day, cuts through the other lock and takes both bikes away. I don't think this has happened in thi ... [more]
Maybe some inspiration for cycle parking designs comes from drinking. The beer photo was taken during a Cycle Registration conference in Ostende, Belgium, November 2001. The Cycle parking photo was taken somewhere in Malmo, Sweden.
Bikes often fall over when locked to 'Sheffield' style stands. This happens because as the neighbouring bikes are parked and unparked the bike is jostled and the cycle lock works its way down the leg of the stand.
Token cycle parking (I've never seen anything but wheelbenders) in Montevideo's sleek new train station.
Cycle parking in the underpass below the Intendencia Municipal de Montevideo (City Hall), near the main staff entrance.
Cycle (and motor bike) parking near the Museo Nacional de Artes Visuales, Parque Rodó, Montevideo
There's a remarkable amount of cycling in Montevideo, although there's almost no cycle parking. Drivers are pretty mellow (especially compared to Argentina!) and the roads are safe.
Cycle parking at the EXCEL exhibition centre - there's more emphasis on taxis (background) and the DLR, relieved by free shuttles buses to Canning Town station.
On some City roads, cyclists make up 27% of the traffic at peak commuting times. Cycle parking in the Square Mile is in terribly short supply despite new racks being added in 2008. Most of the buildings in Austin Friars have railings round ... [more]
Cycle parking at Longniddry station - the only acccess to the cycle route to Haddington is by these steps and the footbridge.
New Sheffield stands opposite the new entry to the westbound side of Walton on Thames station
Cycle parking outside Kingston upon Thames station - nice to have it, but it's so close to the wall that only one side is useable. If they were at a slight angle it would help.
There's an increasing amount of cycle parking in Kingston (where the student population is booming) - also across the road to the rear.
The Accordia development (on the former Government Offices site) recently won the RIBA Stirling prize for the best architectural project of the year - there's almost no public cycle parking, but homes do have large garage areas, perhaps on ... [more]
It'd be nice to have a dropped kerb here (behind the bike's rear wheel) and a cycle link to Mill Road, avoiding the East Road junction.
cycle parking outside Haymarket station - the station is overcrowded and soon to be rebuilt, so let's hope there's a big expansion in cycle parking.
Cycle parking with a view of the Forth Rail Bridge (the cyclist's bike is in fact behind the camera)
Cycle parking at the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh - a new entry complex is being built on the opposite side of the garden, which may have more cycle stands.
Odd positioning of cycle rack at the House for an Art-Lover, Glasgow - blocking the path if there any bikes parked there.
Lots of cycle parking (wheelbenders, though) at a primary school in St Andrews (it's half-term).
St Andrews University student union (also six stands on the far side) - the town is so small that there isn't really much of a cycling culture.
Leuchars station - cycle stands and ramped bridge - start of the route to St Andrews.
A pathetic amount of cycle parking at the Helston Tesco, despite the good cycle paths nearby.
Cycle parking at the new Combined Universities in Cornwall campus, Tremough - presumably in use during the day, although there's a very good bus service
Cycle parking hidden away behind the Serpentine Gallery in a no-cycling zone. Presumably for staff - visitors are just fine locking their bikes to the railings opposite the entrance.
Insufficient cycle parking at Cologne's second largest railway station - Deutzer Bahnhof, exit "Messe" - fairground. The cycle stand is a single unit to lock to, but pushing bikes through is limited.
La Spezia - minimal cycle parking at the entry to the pedestrianised main street (which is open to cycling, although you wouldn't want to try at passagiata time, in the early evening).
Menton station - just about the only cycle parking I saw in town. However there's quite a bit of cycling, mainly near the seafront, despite a dominant car culture.
Sainsbury's cycle stands are far from the entrance. There is demand for cycle parking closer to the entrance.
