"Tegelijk groen" indicates that cyclists have their own green phase at these traffic lights and that they're allowed to travel in any direction on a green - including diagonal, which is demonstrated in the video.
Its is less obvious that cyclists generally get two greens per cycle of the lights.
After crossing the road in the video we proceed along Groningerstraat. This is a road in Assen of about the same width as Gilbert Road in Cambridge, but unlike Gilbert Road, room has been found here for car parking (one side only at a time) and a 3 metre wide unidirectional cycle path on each side of the road (the first bit is four metres wide and bidirectional as this is needed next to a school entrance).
There is more information about simultaneous greens here: http://hembrow.blogspot.com/2008/08/simultaneous-green.html

New properly segregated path replacing older hybrid style provision. Also note that the road is being reduced from three lanes at this point to two.

Possible solution for Gilbert Road in Cambridge. Even those of us on the Assen trip who strongly dislike off-road cycleways liked this very much. It had a feel of an on-road path but had some segregation.

Brand new fully segregated path approaching a junction. Note how the entrances for driveways are kept deliberately narrow so that drivers have to take care crossing the cycle path.

It's just dark, and of course there are still plenty of cyclists on the streets of Assen, not that any of this lot have bothered with lights. The point being that there is such a level of safety that people often don't bother with lights ... [more]
