The Maids Causeway crossing (at Fair Street) has an automatic detector. It is one of those modern TOUCAN crossings that will turn red for pedestrians / cyclists within 6 seconds, but will actually maintain the red light for motor traffic as long as it detects people on the crossing (3 min max). When there is a queue of cyclists (as there usually is at peak time), all cyclists would have to do is to keep entering the crossing as long as another cyclist or pedestrian is still in the detection zone.
